Transforming Campus Fitness at the University of Denver.
To better support their student and member population, the University of Denver transformed two underused racquetball courts into a modern strength training facility — a move driven by the growing demand for strength-focused fitness. In partnership with Eleiko, the university created a dynamic space that features world-class equipment and a thoughtfully designed training environment.
“Strength training only continues to increase in popularity for our students and members,” said Stacy Musunuru, Assistant Director of Student Programs at the University of Denver. “We wanted to create an advanced training area with more platforms and stations to enhance the fitness center experience by not having to wait for equipment.”
The goal was clear: reduce wait times and improve the member experience by increasing access to high-quality strength training stations. Eleiko explored multiple layouts before finalizing the concept, eventually deconstructing and redesigning the two courts to house a comprehensive strength training environment.
Eleiko explored multiple layouts before finalizing the concept. Two racquetball courts were deconstructed and redesigned to house a comprehensive strength training environment. The finished space includes six Prestera Half Racks paired with SVR platforms and three Half Rack/Smith Machine combos, along with benches, bars, Sport Training Plates, and an array of attachments.
The SVR platforms proved to be a crucial component, offering sound-reducing technology that enhances both the training experience and the broader atmosphere of the facility.
“It was important to have one of the most sound-resistant platforms in the industry,” said Musunuru. “The SVR platforms are one of the best. This has made the experience even more enjoyable for everyone, working out in and/or near the space.”
Since the new training space opened, engagement at the fitness center has significantly increased. Students are drawn to the updated facility, with many exploring strength training for the first time. The university recently launched a Powerlifting Club, which now uses the space and equipment for regular training sessions as its membership continues to grow.
Beyond recreational training, the facility now supports academic and athletic programmes. Classes such as Resistance Training and Olympic Weightlifting — part of DU’s kinesiology curriculum — are taught using the Eleiko equipment. Introductory lifting sessions are offered as part of the group fitness schedule, and club sports teams use the Prestera racks for their strength training sessions with coaches.
The partnership extended beyond product delivery. Eleiko worked closely with the university team to provide layout recommendations and efficient equipment integration.
“All members of the Eleiko team were responsive, helpful, and professional,” said Musunuru. “Their recommendations helped us use our space most efficiently.”
