The University of California at San Diego – home of the Tritons – opened the new Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center in October 2015. Costing over $4.3 million in total, the center is an incredibly inspiring venue located in the north-west section of the UCSD campus. It was made possible largely thanks to an extremely generous donation from Dean Spanos, chair of the board at the San Diego Chargers, and his family.
"For me and my family, it is special to have a building so beautiful that honors our grandfather and also continues his legacy of supporting UC San Diego," said John Spanos, President of Football Operations for the Chargers at the opening of the new building.

"The new facility will allow us to be more efficient with the way we train student-athletes" said Myles Cooper, Director of Strength and Conditioning at UC San Diego. "It was designed to accommodate multiple teams training at one time, with each having its own work space. In addition to the space, our new technology will ensure we develop the right physical qualities at the right time of the season."
When the decision was taken to equip the new center, Eleiko was the logical choice for Coach Cooper, with the safety, functionality and design of its products a key consideration.
"This facility will help us in a number of ways," said Earl Edwards, UC San Diego's Director of Athletics. "One of the things we try to do at UCSD is stand out from the crowd by being unique, whether it be through academic prowess, facilities or outstanding coaches. No doubt, this facility will set us apart from the schools we're in competition with."
