Creating a Community-Focused, High-Performance Training Space for the University of Edinburgh.

CrossFit 1583 is a purpose-built training space designed to bring a designated functional fitness space to campus at the University of Edinburgh. Developed over three years, the facility reflects the university’s commitment to evolving its sport and wellbeing offer, with a focus on community, inclusivity, and performance.

The project was driven by a noticeable shift in training habits — a demand for varied, high-intensity, coach-led sessions that go beyond traditional gym offerings. While the university’s existing facilities were well equipped, there was a clear opportunity to create a dedicated environment for small-group CrossFit-style training, rooted in progression and positive community engagement.

The goal was to design a space that could deliver high-volume, high-intensity programming safely and effectively — welcoming everyone from beginners to advanced athletes. Durability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability were key requirements. That’s where Eleiko came in.

“Having already partnered with Eleiko across other campus facilities; it was a natural choice to work with them again on CrossFit 1583. From early planning through to final installation, the collaboration was focused on creating a high-performance space that not only met our technical needs but also reflected the cultural values of the university.” — Chris McIntosh, Head of Sports Infrastructure & Sustainability, Sport & Exercise, The University of Edinburgh

Two custom wall-mounted Prestera rigs form the heart of the space, complete with an array of training attachments and integrated storage to support efficient, varied programming. The facility features XF bars and plates, kettlebells, and dumbbells — providing reliable, ergonomic tools for all user levels. The ‘built to last’ quality of Eleiko’s equipment, paired with the brand’s commitment to sustainability, made it a natural fit for a project focused on long-term impact and inclusion.

Chris McIntosh added, “CrossFit 1583 has quickly become a vibrant hub within the university’s sport and fitness ecosystem — a place where students, staff, and visiting athletes come together to train, learn, and thrive. It strengthens the sense of community on campus while reinforcing our reputation as a leader in sport and active wellbeing.”
